From the Journal

There are seasons of life when growth feels exciting.

And then there are seasons when growth feels uncomfortable.

This chapter was filmed during one of those uncomfortable seasons.

Over the past year, I've found myself taking inventory of the environments around me—not just the physical spaces I occupy, but the conversations, expectations, habits, and relationships that influence my daily life. What I've learned is that growth doesn't always begin with adding something new. Sometimes it begins by recognizing what no longer fits.

As I worked through this chapter, I found myself reflecting on the environments that have shaped me throughout my life. Some pushed me forward. Some challenged me. Some taught me lessons through discomfort. All of them played a role in helping me become who I am today. But I've also learned that gratitude and alignment are not always the same thing. You can appreciate what a season gave you while still recognizing it's time to move forward.

This realization became especially clear as I navigated a career transition and continued building the foundation of Valen Knights & Company. In both situations, the question wasn't whether something was good or bad. The question was whether it was aligned with the life I was trying to create. That distinction changed the way I viewed growth entirely.

Today, I find myself becoming more intentional about the environments I cultivate. The people I spend time with. The content I consume. The projects I commit to. The routines I repeat. I've learned that environment is rarely neutral. It is either reinforcing who you're becoming or quietly pulling you away from it.

Perhaps that's why this chapter feels so personal.

Because curating your environment isn't really about controlling everything around you.

It's about creating conditions that support the person you're working to become.

The Chapter Essay

I. The Realization

For a long time, I believed that growth was primarily a matter of discipline.

If I worked hard enough, stayed focused enough, and remained committed enough, I could create the results I wanted regardless of what surrounded me.

While discipline certainly matters, I've come to realize that no one exists in isolation.

Every environment carries influence.

The people around us shape our expectations. The conversations we engage in shape our thinking. The spaces we occupy shape our habits. Even the content we consume quietly reinforces beliefs about what is possible, acceptable, and worth pursuing.

What shifted for me was recognizing that growth isn't only about changing yourself. It's also about becoming aware of what is changing you.

Once I began paying attention, I noticed patterns everywhere. Some environments encouraged creativity, curiosity, and progress. Others reinforced limitation, negativity, or complacency. Neither influence was always obvious in the moment, but over time their impact became impossible to ignore.

That awareness changed the way I viewed growth entirely.

II. The Practice

Today, I approach my environment with greater intention.

Not from a place of control, but from a place of alignment.

I've become more selective about the conversations I invest in and the voices I allow to shape my perspective. I've learned that attention is one of our most valuable resources, and where we direct it often determines what grows.

This practice extends beyond relationships.

It influences the media I consume, the routines I maintain, and the spaces where I spend my time. It influences the creative work I pursue and the standards I set for myself.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is to create conditions that support the life I'm trying to build.

I've found that positive environments rarely happen by accident. They are often the result of intentional choices repeated over time.

Small decisions accumulate.

A healthier routine.

A more supportive community.

A better conversation.

A more inspiring space.

Individually they may seem insignificant. Together, they become the atmosphere in which growth occurs.

III. The Standard

One principle continues to guide me:

I no longer ask whether something is comfortable. I ask whether it is aligned.

Comfort often encourages us to stay where we are.

Alignment challenges us to move toward who we are becoming.

Not every environment that feels familiar is helping us grow. Not every opportunity that supports growth feels comfortable. Learning to recognize the difference has been one of the most valuable lessons of this season.

The environments we choose today often become the realities we experience tomorrow.

That's why curating your environment isn't about creating perfect conditions.

It's about becoming intentional enough to recognize what is helping you move forward—and having the courage to adjust what isn't.

Because whether we realize it or not, every environment is shaping something.

The question is whether it is shaping us by default or by design.

THE EDIT

Introduction

Every chapter of Life. Curated explores an idea through lived experience.

The Edit expands that idea through practical perspectives—offering additional ways to think about, understand, and apply the lesson.

In this chapter, environment extends beyond physical spaces. It includes the influences, routines, and systems that quietly shape our choices each day. The perspectives below explore how intentional environments can support growth, reinforce healthy habits, and create alignment between who we are and who we're becoming.

Perspective One: Philosophy — The Power of Environment/Proximity

The environments we inhabit often influence our behavior long before we notice their impact.

Whether it's a workplace, a community, a routine, or a conversation, every environment carries expectations and norms that shape our decisions.

Growth becomes easier when the spaces around us support the direction we're trying to go.

This perspective explores why environment matters and how intentional surroundings can create intentional outcomes.

Perspective Two: The Plate — Vegetables

Environment isn't limited to people and places. It also includes the systems we build around our health and well-being.

The foods we keep available, the meals we prepare, and the choices we make consistently all contribute to the environment we create for ourselves. Healthy habits become easier to maintain when they're supported by intentional preparation.

The Plate reminds us that success is often less about willpower and more about the conditions we create in advance

Quotable Notes

"Every environment has a culture—even when nobody intentionally creates one."
"What surrounds you today often shapes who you become tomorrow."
"Alignment begins with awareness."
"The healthiest choices are often made before the moment of decision."
"Growth becomes easier when your environment supports your intentions."

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Your Environment Is Always Influencing You

The people, spaces, and inputs surrounding you shape your habits, expectations, and perspective. Awareness is the first step toward intentional change.

Alignment Matters More Than Familiarity

What feels comfortable isn't always what supports growth. Learning to distinguish between comfort and alignment is essential for meaningful progress.

Small Influences Compound Over Time

A conversation, a routine, or a seemingly insignificant choice may not seem important in isolation. Over time, these influences shape who we become.

Growth Requires Intentionality

Positive environments rarely happen by accident. They are often the result of conscious decisions repeated consistently over time.

Curate What Shapes You

The goal isn't to control everything around you. It's to become intentional about the influences you repeatedly allow into your life.

THE INTEGRATION

One of the lessons I've learned throughout this season is that growth doesn't happen in a vacuum.

We often focus on changing ourselves while overlooking the environments that influence our choices every day. Yet our surroundings frequently determine what feels normal, acceptable, and possible.

This week, take inventory.

Consider the conversations you're having, the content you're consuming, the routines you're maintaining, and the spaces where you spend your time.

Ask yourself:

Does my environment support the life I'm trying to create?

You don't need to change everything overnight.

Sometimes a single adjustment—a healthier habit, a better routine, a more intentional conversation, or a more inspiring space—is enough to begin shifting your trajectory.

The goal isn't to control everything around you.

It's to become intentional about what you repeatedly allow to shape you.

THE CLOSING

The life we're building is influenced by more than our decisions.

It's influenced by the people around us, the environments we occupy, and the standards we choose to accept.

Every day, those influences are shaping something.

The question isn't whether your environment matters.

The question is whether you've chosen it intentionally.

And perhaps that's where growth truly begins.

Be exceptional. Be stellar. Be extraordinary. Be you.
